Los Arqueros, Ballesteros's first course on this coast
Los Arqueros is a golf and residential community in Benahavís, on the hillside above San Pedro de Alcántara. Its club opened in 1991 with the first Costa del Sol course designed by Severiano Ballesteros — eighteen holes, par 71 — and has since added padel, bowling and a fitness centre alongside it.

Los Arqueros is one of the few places in Benahavís where the golf came first and the houses arranged themselves around it. Severiano Ballesteros laid the course out on this hillside and it opened in 1991 as the first design of his on the Costa del Sol: eighteen holes, par 71, cut into slopes that fall towards the Mediterranean rather than lying flat beside it. The community grew along the same contours, on the mountain road that climbs out of San Pedro de Alcántara, close enough to the coast to be practical and high enough to be noticeably cooler in August.
The built stock is mixed in a way the estates further up the hill are not. Gated apartment and townhouse communities from the 1990s and 2000s occupy the lower terraces, most with a communal pool, mature planting and a lift; detached villas take the higher and steeper ground, some original to the first phases, some rebuilt. That mix is the reason Los Arqueros is one of the few Benahavís addresses where a first purchase on the coast and a large family villa can honestly be discussed in the same conversation. It also means service charges vary enormously between neighbouring communities.
The club does considerably more than golf, and that is what keeps the place alive out of season: padel, tennis, pickleball, bowling, a billiards room and two restaurants — La View and the Bowling & Sport Bar — which between them mean something is open on a wet Tuesday in February. Everyday shopping and the international schools are down in San Pedro and Nueva Andalucía. On the local ladder Los Arqueros sits low within its own municipality, above the village itself but below the gated estates, which makes it the practical entry point to a Benahavís address.
Two kinds of building sit side by side. On the lower ground, low-rise gated communities of apartments and townhouses from the 1990s and 2000s: tiled roofs, arched terraces, communal gardens, underground parking on the later phases. Higher up, detached villas on individual plots — a mix of period Andalusian and later contemporary rebuilds with flat roofs and much larger glazing. Almost nothing here is original village fabric; the whole hillside was laid out around a golf course. Renovation stock is concentrated in the earliest apartment phases, where kitchens, bathrooms and terrace waterproofing are usually the honest budget line.
February is the real test, and Los Arqueros passes it better than most inland addresses: the golf runs, the padel courts fill after work, and the club restaurants keep serving when hillside neighbours have gone dark. Everyday shopping happens down in San Pedro, a short descent, and the international schools that decide most family purchases are in the same direction. The soundtrack is sprinklers early, buggies mid-morning and the Ronda road humming somewhere behind. Walking here is for the course and the internal roads, not for errands — there is no high street on this hillside.
It suits golfers who want a course on the doorstep without a private-estate membership structure, and buyers who want a Benahavís address at the practical end of the municipality. It suits families who value a club that stays open through the winter. It does not suit anyone looking for the seclusion of the estates above — plots here are ordinary, neighbours are close and communities are real. It does not suit a buyer who wants to walk to the beach, and it does not suit anyone irritated by buggies crossing the road.

- The club is considerably more than a course: tennis, padel, pickleball, bowling, a billiards room and a fitness centre share the site, along with two restaurants. Ask what your community fee actually covers, because ownership and club membership are separate arrangements. ↗
- The course opened in 1991 and plays eighteen holes to a par of 71. Elevated tees on the twelfth and thirteenth are part of its character, and also the reason some terraces sit more exposed to stray balls than others. ↗
- The club's registered address is Calle Los Arqueros Nº4, Benahavís, Málaga. Confirm the municipality on the nota simple before assuming which town hall issues a licence or collects the plusvalía on a sale. ↗
- Communities here run from early 1990s apartment phases to standalone villas, and the fee reflects that: a lift, a communal pool and shared gardens push it up, while a villa carries its own costs instead. Compare three years of accounts.
- Benahavís issues the works licence, sets the IBI and settles plusvalía municipal for this hillside, under a 1997 consolidated general plan alongside a Revisión-Adaptación registered in 2019. Ask which document applies to your parcel. ↗

What moves the price here
Los Arqueros sits low on the Benahavís ladder — above Benahavís, the village itself, and below La Alquería, La Quinta and the gated estates further up the same road. Across the municipal boundary its posture reads alongside San Pedro de Alcántara rather than above it, and below Nueva Andalucía. This is the practical entry into the municipality, and the golf rather than the seclusion is what is being bought.
Fairway frontage and the angle of the sea view do most of the sorting, then whether the home is a villa on its own plot or an apartment inside a community with a lift and a pool. Build phase matters too: the earliest communities carry the most renovation.

Questions about Los Arqueros
-
Can visitors and non-residents play the Los Arqueros course?
-
This is a commercially run club rather than a members-only estate course, which is the practical difference between Los Arqueros and the private estates further up the same road. The club operates a golf shop, a practice area and two restaurants and publishes its own booking and green-fee information. Access arrangements and prices change, so confirm the current position with the club directly rather than relying on what a seller tells you a house includes.
↗ -
What is actually open here in the middle of winter?
-
More than on most inland hillsides. The club keeps golf, tennis, padel, pickleball, bowling and a billiards room running on the same site, with two restaurants — La View and the Bowling & Sport Bar — so there is somewhere to eat and something to do without driving to the coast. That matters more than it sounds: a Benahavís address with no winter services means a long descent to San Pedro every time it rains. Here it does not.
↗ -
How much do community fees differ between the communities here?
-
Enough that two homes with the same view can carry very different running costs. The hillside holds early-1990s apartment phases with lifts, communal pools and shared gardens, later phases with underground parking, and detached villas that carry their own maintenance instead of sharing it. Fees follow the services, not the postcode. Ask for three consecutive years of community accounts and the minutes of the last two general meetings; a pending derrama for a roof or a pool tells you more than the current monthly figure.
-
Is Los Arqueros close enough to the coast for school runs?
-
It is the closest of the Benahavís golf addresses to the coast road, which is a large part of its appeal. The hillside sits directly above San Pedro de Alcántara, so the supermarkets, the sports clubs and the international schools of San Pedro and Nueva Andalucía are all in the same downhill direction rather than back through the mountain. Families still drive every day, and August traffic still lengthens it, but this is a daily descent rather than an expedition.
-
What does the Ballesteros design mean for someone living here?
-
It means the course was routed across a slope rather than laid flat, and that shapes the houses. Fairways drop and turn with the hillside, elevated tees on holes twelve and thirteen sit above the play, and homes read the terrain the same way — terraces stack, gardens terrace, and the sea view depends on a few metres of height rather than on distance from the water. It also gives the address a name that a buyer from outside Spain recognises before they have seen a photograph.
